ESTABLISH GOALS Together with the therapist, goals will be determined specific to each patient to: Restore maximum function Increase the speed of recovery Prevent re-occurrence Promote long-term health and wellness TREATMENT A specific treatment plan will consist of one-on-one patient-to-therapist interaction with approximately 1-hour sessions. Private patient rooms, along with a large gym area, will provide patients with respect and comfort during treatments. Treatments may consist of, but are not limited to, therapeutic exercises and/or activities, manual techniques, modalities, and home instruction. EDUCATION & WELLNESS An important component of treatment plans includes teaching patients how to take care of themselves and to prevent future injury. The patient is an equal part of the team and should participate in the treatment given. Wellness is the key to a future that is pain-free, giving one the freedom of movement to live your life to its fullest. - Nuclear Medicine | MCH... Morris County Hospital
MCH Radiology Department Nuclear Medicine As of 2023, MCH is proud to offer in house nuclear medicine! General Nuclear Medicine: Nuclear medicine comprises diagnostic examinations that result in images of body anatomy and function. The images are developed based on the detection of energy emitted from a radioactive substance given to the patient, either intravenously or by mouth. Generally, radiation to the patient is similar to that resulting from standard x-ray examinations. Cardiac Nuclear Medicine: A nuclear stress test is a procedure that checks the blood flow to the heart and how well your heart is beating. You will receive a small, safe amount of radioactive medication that circulates to the heart muscle. A special camera is used to measure how well this medication spreads throughout the heart. Hours The following exams are available every Thursday: Bone Imaging Cardiac Blood Pool Single Cardiac Rest/Stress Testing Gastric Emptying Study Gastrointestinal Blood Loss Imaging Hepatobiliary Imaging Intestine Imaging Kidney Imaging Parathyroid Study Pulmonary Perfusion Imaging Thyroid Imaging An appointment is required for these exams and start time is dependent on the exam being performed. Frequently Asked Questions... How Do I Prepare for a Nuclear Study? Some Nuclear Studies have a prep and some do not. When scheduling your appointment, you will be informed of any prep, we will also call you to remind you of your prep the day prior to your exam. What Does the Equipment Look Like? During most nuclear medicine examinations, you will lie down on a scanning table. Consequently, the only piece of equipment you may notice is the specialized nuclear imaging camera used during the procedure. It is enclosed in metallic housing designed to facilitate imaging of specific parts of the body. It can look like a large round metallic apparatus suspended from a tall, moveable post or a sleek one-piece metal arm that hangs over the examination table. A nearby computer console processes the data from the procedure. How Does the Procedure Work? You are given a small dose of radioactive material, usually intravenously but sometimes orally, that localizes in specific body organ systems. This compound, called a radiopharmaceutical agent or tracer, eventually collects in the organ and gives off energy as gamma rays. The gamma camera detects the rays and works with a computer to produce images and measurements of organs and tissues. We offer online sharing of your medical images using Nuance Powershare. This service allows us to share images with your provider in a secure and convenient way! All imaging will be sent to the physicians of Manhattan Radiology to be read and reported. Your ordering provider will have your report within 24 to 48 hours. Your provider should contact you with your results. All services require a written order from a physician in good standing and licensed to practice medicine in the State of Kansas. Return to MCH Radiology Department Return to All MCH Services
- Aquatic Therapy | MCH Rehab Center
MCH Rehab Center Aquatic Therapy What is Aquatic Therapy? Experienced therapists are waiting to help in a state-of-the-art facility featuring an underwater camera system, assisted entrance and exit, a temperature-controlled environment, a removable floor for depth control, and water currents with variable speeds. Aquatic therapy is often used in conjunction with traditional land-based therapy to enhance and restore a person's functional abilities. Populations that may benefit range from children to older adults. Oftentimes, patients may regain their quality of life faster and more thoroughly than with land therapy alone. How does aquatic therapy promote healing? Buoyancy The buoyancy of water provides support, allowing a patient to move more easily. This can reduce apprehension about movement. Heat Aquatic therapy is provided in a heated pool with temperatures ranging from 92-94 degrees. Exercising in warm water increases blood flow and oxygen delivery to the injury, which promotes healing. Hydrostatic Pressure Pressure from water molecules surrounding the body helps circulate blood from the legs to the heart, often reducing swelling in the ankles and feet. Resistance Water resistance improves balance and strength in all muscle directions, as well as increasing sensory awareness. Resistance can be tailored to each individual patient based on the speed of movement. Benefits of Aquatic Therapy... Accelerate healing Decrease apprehension to movement Initiate rehab at an earlier stage; therefore returning to activities of daily living in the shortest possible time Decrease rehabilitation time and overall treatment costs Enhance exercise and create a safe environment for progressive rehabilitation Improve tolerance to weight-bearing activity Goals of Aquatic Therapy... Improve confidence during daily functional activities Improve cardiovascular function and endurance Improve muscle strength Reduce stress Increase range of motion and flexibility Improve balance and coordination Who can be helped with Aquatic Therapy? Aquatic therapy is beneficial to patients of all ages. Common diagnoses that can be improved with aquatic therapy include, but are not limited to: Low Back Pain Joint & Muscle Pain Orthopedic Injuries Sporting Injuries Work-Related Injuries Post-Operative Hips, Ankles & Shoulders Osteoarthritis Impaired Balance Difficulty Walking Generalized Weakness Multiple Sclerosis Stroke Fibromyalgia Spinal Cord Injuries Cerebral Palsy Autism/Asperger's Disease Developmental Delay Parkinson's Disease Traumatic Brain Injuries OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU The goal of the Morris County Hospital Rehab Center is to provide quality care with an emphasis on individual, personalized service. Our Radiology Services CT Scan (Computed Tomography) Computed Tomography is a sophisticated form of x-ray imaging that provides pictures of the body in a series of slices. A CT scan shows clear images of bone, internal organs, muscles and blood vessels which allows doctors to distinguish between normal, diseased, or injured tissue. Learn More DEXA Scan (Bone Density) DEXA scans measure your bone density with a low dose of radiation, which is interpreted by sophisticated computer analysis. Your test results will assist your physician in determining whether you need treatment for bone loss. Learn More Diagnostic Radiology An x-ray image is produced when a small amount of radiation passes through the body. Your provider may order an x-ray to help diagnose an injury or disease in nearly any part of the body. Learn More Mammography This procedure uses very low doses of radiation to obtain images of the breasts, allowing doctors to detect small cancers even before they can be felt. Learn More MRI MRI provides excellent images without radiation exposure by using a super conductive electromagnet, radio waves and sophisticated computer software to generate and enhance images. The result is an unprecedented view of internal organs, body structure and systems which provide detailed images needed to make an accurate diagnosis. Learn More Nuclear Medicine Nuclear medicine comprises diagnostic examinations that result in images of body anatomy and function. The images are developed based on the detection of energy emitted from a radioactive substance given to the patient, either intravenously or by mouth. - Vital Stim Therapy | MCH Rehab Center
MCH Rehab Center Vital Stim Therapy What is Vital Stim Therapy? Vital Stim Therapy is used in conjunction with traditional oral motor exercises in order to strengthen swallowing muscles and improve overall swallow function. Often times, patients regain their swallowing ability faster and more thoroughly than with traditional dysphagia techniques. Vital Stim is the only FDA approved treatment approach that successfully combines Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) and traditional dysphagia techniques. Vital Stim is a method to promote swallowing through the use of electrical current directed to affected muscles. The goal of this therapy is to strengthen the swallowing muscles and improve motor control of the swallow. What is Dysphagia? Dysphagia is defined as difficulty swallowing. It can occur after a stroke or other neurological diseases, normal aging, or after a long period of inactivity. An estimated 15 million adults in the US currently suffer from dysphagia. The management of dysphagia mainly consists of diet modification to decrease choking episodes, and in severe dysphagia a feeding tube may be placed in the stomach to provide nutrition. In the last few years, new treatment options have become available, especially the use of electrical stimulation. This research based treatment tool, Vital Stim Therapy, has resulted in positive outcomes in most patients. It is simple for certified clinicians to administer and is pain free for the patient. What diagnoses can benefit from Vital Stim? Stroke Parkinson’s Disease Multiple Sclerosis Myasthenia Gravis Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Muscular Dystrophy Dementia Post head/neck cancer Dysphagia Facts... It is estimated that oropharyngeal dysphagia affects between 6 and 15 million adults and an unknown number of children in the United States. (ECRI, 1999) Dysphagia is very common after stroke. By some estimates as many as 25-50% of acute stroke patients develop dysphagia. (Mann, 2000) It is also common in various neurological diseases, head and neck cancer, and also aging. As many as 20-40% of head injured patients may present with dysphagia. (Winstein, 1981) Many patients with dysphagia suffer seriously impaired quality of life and may develop serious complications, such as dehydration and malnutrition. Therapist Training... The Vital Stim certification course consists of 12 hours of online certification and testing, as well as 16 hours of hands-on certification coursework. At the end of the course the clinician must pass a written post-test, as well as demonstrate accurate practical application of Vital Stim Therapy. All Vital Stim treatments require a physician's referral. If you have insurance that requires you to contact your Primary Care Physician prior to going to the emergency room, you are responsible for calling your physician for approval. Most insurance plans have special steps which must be followed unless you are seeking treatment for a life-threatening condition. Insurance plans are quite different and you need to know your plan requirements. If they are not met, your benefits can be greatly reduced or denied by your insurance company. Motor Vehicle Accidents If you sustain an injury associated with a motor vehicle accident you must provide Morris County Hospital with information on your motor vehicle insurance carrier. Please notify our billing department when a claim number has been assigned. You must report your injury to your own motor vehicle insurance carrier. Kansas law requires claims related to injuries occurring as a result of ownership, operation, maintenance, or use of a motor vehicle to be filed with a motor vehicle insurance. Any claim for an injury arising from contact with a motor vehicle, even if the vehicle is not moving, must first be filed with your motor vehicle insurance. Most health insurance plans will not consider the claim until it has been filed with the motor vehicle insurance. Worker’s Compensation Injuries If you believe you have a work-related injury, you are required to provide Morris County Hospital with the name and address of your employer. You must report the accident to your employer within 24 hours. Failure to do so may result in loss of benefits. Health insurance plans generally will not pay claims determined to be work related. Morris County Hospital Standard Charges To improve price transparency, all U.S. hospitals and health systems are required to provide lists of standard hospital charges ― also called a chargemaster ― so patients can compare prices across hospitals. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind as you view the list of standard charges (chargemaster). These charges are rarely the price that patients pay. The chargemaster lists the dollar amount set for each service prior to insurance contract/benefit plan discounts or self-pay discounts being applied, so the price patients pay tends to be less than the standard charge. Hospital charges differ from patient to patient for the same service depending upon variations in treatment. Patients who are eligible for financial assistance also receive additional discounts. Items included in a charge vary across hospital systems. For example, what’s included in one hospital’s charge for room and board may differ from another hospital’s charge ― some hospitals bundle services together into a single charge that others may list separately. Looking at various hospital charges does not provide any indication of quality of service and outcomes. - Speech Therapy | MCH Rehab Center
MCH Rehab Center Speech Therapy What is Speech Therapy? Speech Therapy is so much more than just “talking.” Speech Therapy is an extensive field that can benefit all ages, from birth to adult. Speech Therapy addresses cognition (memory, orientation, sequencing, executive functioning, medication management), speech-language disorders (adult and children), voice disorders, and swallowing difficulties. Swallowing Often times when people have some type of swallowing difficulty they think they just have to "deal with it," which is not the case at all. Some people are more affected than others, and some have circumstances that can affect their swallowing, such as a stroke, illness/ disease, surgery, oral/laryngeal cancer, etc. Common symptoms of swallowing problems are (including, but not limited to): coughing, clearing throat after bites or drinks, feeling as if food gets "stuck," recurring pneumonia, and a change in one's voice after swallowing. Speech therapists can be helpful in identifying what muscles may be affected and work with the patient on exercises and strategies to address the weakness/problem. Cognition Speech therapists can address many cognitive deficits that may be associated with post-surgery confusion, dementia, and an overall decrease in cognition with illness or age. Speech therapy can help improve orientation, medication management, finance management, sequencing, short-term memory, and safety awareness. Language Disorders Language disorders can be either receptive or expressive... Receptive disorders refer to difficulties in understanding or processing language. Expressive disorders include difficulty putting words together, limited vocabulary, or inability to use language in a socially appropriate way. Speech disorders include the following problems, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association: Articulation Disorders Include difficulties producing sounds in syllables or saying words incorrectly to the point that other people can't understand what's being said. Fluency Disorders Include problems such as stuttering, the condition in which the flow of speech is interrupted by abnormal stoppages, repetitions (st-st-stuttering), or prolonging sounds and syllables (ssssstuttering) Resonance & Voice Disorders Include problems with pitch, volume, or quality of the voice that distracts listeners from what's being said. Changes in voice can be attributed to paralyzed vocal folds, oral/laryngeal cancer, Parkinson's disease, or increased muscle tension in laryngeal musculature. Voice therapy can also be beneficial with pediatric patients in cases of vocal abuse. For example, a child who may have a hoarse voice due to increased yelling (during play, sports, cheering, etc.) Specialty speech treatments offered at MCH Rehab Center: LSVT Loud LSVT Loud is a treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions to improve vocal loudness. The treatment has been shown to improve respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory function, as well as maximize a patient's speech intelligibility. Vital Stim Therapy Vital stim therapy is a safe and effective treatment for patients suffering from difficulty swallowing. It is a non-invasive, external electrical stimulation therapy cleared to market by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002 for the treatment of swallowing disorders with application on the anterior neck. It has been shown to accelerate recovery time, as well as help patients achieve sustained improvement and long-term results with improvements to swallow function. Myofa scial Release Myofascial release addresses the specific patient populations of head/neck cancer, treatment of fibrosis, dysphagia, various dysphonias, and trismus/TMJ disorders. What we treat at MCH Rehab Center: Adults Swallowing difficulties Stroke rehabilitation Traumatic brain injury Voice disorders Altered mental status post surgery Overall cognitive decline Children Therapy should begin as soon as possible. Children enrolled in therapy early in their development, younger than 3 years old, tend to have better outcomes than those who begin therapy later. This does not mean that older kids can't make progress in therapy; they may progress at a slower rate because they often have learned patterns that need to be changed.
