As we embark on Labor Day Weekend 2026, a time for a last summer hoorah, including BBQ, sweet corn, beer, and football with family and friends, I thought I would pause and give a real shout out to the reason this holiday was created back in 1894. The reasons for its formation weren’t necessarily pretty, as American workers in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution were not treated with much respect and equity in many of the “sweat shops” of the larger cities. It took a riot or two and a rushed response from Congress to create some labor laws with more regulations, and ultimately the Labor Day Holiday, to change the work environment for the better. I feel owners and managers of today’s businesses have learned a lot since those days and currently are even including their staff with some of the decision-making dialogues. Today Labor Day remains a celebration of our work force, even if in an understated manner. Mostly we just hear about another Big Sales Event opportunity...so spend wisely, but I do wish to thank and appreciate all of our workers for MCH. You all rock and more than deserve a long weekend! Enjoy it (or enjoy the overtime if you have to be here)!

Wish to thank Kevin Kepley, via his PRN status, for his surprise role this week in delivering a three-day Mock State Survey for our department’s benefit. With two unannounced surveys in the last three weeks at our Chase County and Herington Clinics, we are thinking that regional survey activity is ticking up and our overdue hospital visit may be much more likely in a near timeframe. So, we appreciate the thoroughness that Kevin has given our teams to clean up some things still needing attention. I also want to thank Sara Roberts for getting us through the two Clinic surveys quite effectively: one with very minimal citations, and the one in Herington, with zero citations! That is a real tribute considering this was a first-time review for the Herington Clinic as a Rural Health Clinic site!! Thank you, Sara and Kevin.

It is KHA Convention time again next week. It will be nice to have MCH so highly represented with at least 8 or 9 Staff and Board members attending! I happen to link participation with engagement, and engaged workers are always more effective at improving the health and condition of MCH. We will do our best to bring back highlights for the rest of our team to learn from.
