Meet Our Staff
Our staff is highly credentialed with many years of professional experience. We offer a Certified Hand Therapist and two Doctorate Level Physical Therapists.

Whether you require therapy following an injury, accident or surgery, or need treatment for a medical condition,
Morris County Hospital’s Physical Therapy department has trained and certified specialists on staff to assist you.

A native of Junction City, Kansas, Jeff attended Kansas State University, University of Kansas, and University of Kansas Medical Center, receiving his bachelor of Occupational Therapy in 1988. He has worked as a contract provider to hospitals, as well as a private practice owner for over 20 years. Jeff received CHT (certified hand therapist) certification in 2004, and completed his doctoral degree at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2007. Jeff has specialized in the treatment of various upper extremity and hand conditions for over 15 years. Jeff has been a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association and Kansas Occupational Therapy Association since 1988. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing and hunting.

Jeff Mathis
OTD, OTR, CHT

Dawn earned her Masters in Physical Therapy from Wichita State University in 2005. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2003 with a Bachelor in Science, with emphasis in Health Service Organization and Policy. She also was a Graduate with Honors in the Order of the Purple in 2001 with an Associate in Science. Dawn was born and raised in Council Grove, KS, and graduated from Council Grove High School in 1999.

Dawn has had clinical experience in a variety of settings, including practice in a rural hospital, outpatient and inpatient orthopedics, and outpatient and inpatient pediatrics. She has had experience with outpatient orthopedic physical therapy, aquatic therapy, and acute inpatient treatment. This has included pre-op and post-op care, sport-specific injuries, musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, and neurological impairments involving pediatric development disorders, balance/vestibular disorders, impaired sensations and muscle tone, and difficulty walking secondary to conditions such as stroke, MS, Parkinson’s Disease, etc. Dawn has also attended continuing education courses from Ola Grimsby Institute, International Spine and Pain Institute, and the Rehab Institute of Chicago emphasizing manual therapy of the spine and extremities based on the musculoskeletal and neurological make-up of the human body. She is also certified in applying Kinisio® tape for pain and edema reduction.

Dawn has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Kansas Physical Therapy Association since 2003. In addition, she is a member of the orthopedic, aquatic, and pediatric sections as well. Dawn began her professional career in Kansas City, but later joined the Mathis team at Morris County Hospital in 2007.

Away from work, Dawn enjoys community activities, staying physically active, and spending time with her family including her husband Lucas and children Sanaia, Brycen and Lucy.

Council Grove Site Coordinator

Christy received her Bachelor in Physical Therapy from Wichita State University in 1989. She also attended Kansas State University for physical therapy pre-requisites after graduating from Council Grove High School in 1984. Christy was born and raised in Council Grove, Kansas.

Christy has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and Kansas Physical Therapy Association since 1987. She served on the board of directors of the Kansas Physical Therapy Association as the nominating chair in the early ‘90s. In addition, she is a member of the American Association of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation and the Missouri-Kansas Association of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Christy has several years of experience treating a wide array of patients including those with sports injuries, post-operative orthopedic conditions, vestibular/balance disorders, cardiovascular deficits, neurological impairments and various musculoskeletal disorders of the neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees and feet. Christy is a certified Sole Support® provider. She is also certified in Kinesio® taping

Outside of work, Christy enjoys singing in church and local community affairs. She and her husband, Don, keep busy attending the ball games of their children, Derek, Casey and Jacob.

Christy Ziegenhirt

Physical Therapist

A native of Hesston, KS, Chris received his B.S. degree in Kinesiology, with an emphasis in Athletic Training from Kansas State University in 1994.  He went on to earn his M.S. degree in Exercise Science from Fort Hays State University in 1997.  Chris became a part of the Mathis Physical Therapy team during its inception in 2003.  He returned to school in 2007 and earned his Physical Therapist Assistant degree from Washburn University in 2009.  Chris has over nine years of clinical experience in working with physical and occupational therapy patients.  Chris' areas of interest include inpatient and outpatient orthopedics, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, and orthotic and brace fitting.  He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and National Athletic Trainers' Association.  Outside of work, Chris enjoys a variety of outdoor activities and spending time with his wife, Aimee, and daughters Aubrie and Delanie.

Physical Therapist

Karson earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Kansas in 2008 where she majored in Sport Science with an emphasis in Exercise Science. Karson went on to obtain her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Wichita State University in 2011. Karson was born and raised in Marion, KS and graduated from Marion High School in 2004.

Karson has had clinical experience in a wide array of settings, including inpatient rehab, outpatient orthopedic, and inpatient acute care. This has included neurological impairments secondary to stroke and spinal cord injury, musculoskeletal injuries and pre-op and post-op care.

Karson has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Kansas Physical Therapy Association since 2008 and attended the American Physical Therapy Association’s Combined Sections Meeting in 2011. Karson joined the Mathis team, shortly after obtaining her Doctor of Physical Therapy, in July 2011.

Away from work, Karson enjoys gardening, cooking, and spending time with her friends and family.

Physical Therapist

Katie is a native of Olpe, KS. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Emporia State University in 2010. She attended graduate school at Wichita State University where she received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2013. Katie has clinical experience in a wide variety of settings, including home health, acute care/inpatient, outpatient orthopedics, and rural health

Katie's future plans include becoming certified in Kinesio taping and ASTYM, as well as specializing in physical therapy treatment of women's health issues.

Katie married shortly after completing her physical therapy education and she and her husband, Edd, reside in Emporia, KS. Outside of work, Katie enjoys jogging, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

Physical Therapist

Orgene is originally from Clifton, Kansas.  He received his BS in Exercise Sciences in 1992 from Kansas State University.  He received his Associate of Applied Science Degree to become a Physical Therapy Assistant from Kansas City Kansas Community College in 1999.  Since obtaining licensure to be a Physical Therapy Assistant, Orgene has gained extensive experience in variety of Physical Therapy Settings which include private outpatient practices, inpatient/outpatient hospital units, home health, and skilled nursing facilities.  Orgene joined Mathis Rehab Centers in April 2012.  Orgene is a Certified Kinesiotaping Practitioner.

Physical Therapist Assistant

Sara was born and raised in Overland Park, KS. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Kansas in 2002. She remained at KU to earn her Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 2004. She received her Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) in 2005 and remains an active member.

Sara is Vital Stim certified after completing a Vital Stim certification Program in September 2009. She has also attended continuing education classes regarding swallowing disorders, cognitive deficits and dementia, as well as speech and communication disorders.

Sara has experience in a variety of clinical settings including hospitals, rehab clinics, skilled nursing facilities, long term care and schools. Outside of work, Sara enjoys spending time with her husband, Adam and son, Joe.

Sara Dirks
MA/CCC-SLP

Janae was born and raised in Council Grove and graduated from Council Grove High School in 2002. She attended Fort Hays State University where she was a member of the track and field indoor/outdoor team participating in triple jump as well as the 100m/400m hurdles. Her education focus at FHSU was Clinical Physiology. She transferred to University of Kansas Medical Center where Janae received a bachelor's degree in 2006 in Occupational Science followed by a Master of Occupational Therapy degree in 2008.

Janae is certified as a lymphedema therapist after attending Klose Training and Consulting certification course in 2011. She has also attended continuing education classes regarding traumatic brain injuries, stroke recovery, deep tissue massage and release, wheelchair seating and positioning, and splinting/orthotic management for upper extremities.

Clinical experience includes inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation, community-based stroke recovery at the American Stroke Foundation, and a primary focus in skilled nursing/rehabilitation setting with diagnoses within neurological, orthopedic, psychological, lymphedema, and general debility areas.

Janae and her family have recently moved back to Council Grove. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Ty, and her two sons, Logan and Ian.

Janae Stockwell

Carolyn has lived in Council Grove since graduating from Council Grove High School. Carolyn joined our staff in 2009 after serving 17 years as the Council Grove Elementary School secretary. She has four children, Stacy, Jake, Derek and Allison.
