2009 H1N1 Flu Virus
Plan, Prepare, Prevent,
Protect - Be Healthy
______________________________________________
The Morris County Hospital, the County Health
Department, and the Family Health Center of Morris County are working
together in an effort to reduce the spread of the flu virus.
What symptoms should I be
alert to? The symptoms of H1N1
flu virus in humans are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and
include:
 | Fever greater than 100 degrees |
 | Body aches |
 | Coughing |
 | Sore throat |
 | Respiratory congestion |
 | In some cases, diarrhea and vomiting |
What else can I do?
As with any influenza virus, individuals are encouraged to take the
following steps to reduce spread:
 |
Wash
your hands
thoroughly with soap and warm water or use an alcohol-based hand
sanitizer to get rid of most germs and avoid touching your eyes,
nose and mouth. |
 | Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to
co-workers and friends. |
 | Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose
of used tissues. |
 | Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water
and getting adequate rest and exercise. |
What should I do if I need medical care?
The Family Health Center asks that if
you are planning on seeing your doctor at the clinic for flu-like
symptoms, that you please call ahead and make an appointment. When
making your appointment, please let the receptionist or nurse know that
you are experiencing flu-like symptoms. The clinic staff asks that you
please enter the Family Health Clinic through the clinic’s northwest
door (it will have a sign on the door to let you know that you have the
correct door) and not through the doctors’ clinic or hospital’s front
entrances.
The Morris County Hospital asks that if
you are coming to the hospital to seek medical care or to have lab work
or an x-ray done for flu-like symptoms, that you please enter the
hospital through the emergency room entrance located on the north side
of the hospital instead of entering the hospital through the main south
entrance.

WHAT ABOUT HOME?
Keeping Yourself and Your Family Healthy
 | Get vaccinated for seasonal flu |
 | Plan for extended care of family at home |
 | Monitor health and stay home when sick |
 | Get plenty of rest |
 | Drink clear fluids (such as water, broth, sports drinks,
electrolyte beverages for infants) to keep from being dehydrated.
|
A sick person should
 | Stay away from other people as much as possible |
 | Use proper hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette |
 | Wear a facemask – if available and tolerable – when sharing
common spaces with other household members to help prevent
spreading the virus especially if other household members are at
high risk for complications from influenza |
 | Stay home until free of fever for at least 24 hours without the
use of fever reducing medications such as Tylenol® |
Most children and adults who are generally in
good health will recover without visiting a health care provider
Get medical care right away if the sick person
at home:
 | has difficulty breathing or chest pain |
 | has purple or blue discoloration of the lips |
 | is vomiting and unable to keep liquids down |
 | has signs of dehydration such as dizziness when standing,
absence of urination, or in infants, a lack of tears when they cry
|
 | has seizures (for example, uncontrolled convulsions) |
 | is less responsive than normal or becomes confused |
Warning!
Do
not
give aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) to children or teenagers who have
the flu; this can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye’s
syndrome.
